Redesign Sneak Peek
Hummingbird has been live for just about 2 months, in that short amount of time, over 13,000 users have registered for the beta. We couldn’t be more humbled. We’ve listened to your feedback, and we realize that our original design was approaching a lot of things, the wrong way. But as Reid Hoffman is famously quoted:
“If you’re not embarrassed by the first version of your product, you’ve launched too late.”
We’re embarrassed. Despite that, we wouldn’t change a thing about the way we approached it. By launching Hummingbird as early and as quickly as we did, we got feedback from you guys, that we would have never been able to think up on our own. Some of the suggestions you guys have sent to us is nothing short of brilliant.
Our focus with this redesign is to make the site a resource for you that is simple, clean and — most importantly — helps you find amazing anime, fast.
Today, we’re thrilled to start sharing the new look with everyone. Admittedly, a lot of this new look has already been implemented, so this post is a little bit late. The primary purpose of this post is to better illustrate how fundamentally different what we’re doing is from MAL.
We’re not simply a prettier version of MAL (Like a few of the copy cats that have made an appearance since we announced Hummingbird…) we’re making anime more social and the experience of watching anime, considerably more fun.
The Explore Page (Click Image for Full-View)
Our revised Explore page is focusing on one thing, and on thing only… helping you find new anime you’ll love. We’re introducing a new feature here called ‘favorite genres’, which will allow you to select as many genres as you enjoy watching and this page will populate based on the genres of anime you actually care about. No more digging. We’ve also expanded are genres extensively. In the mood for an anime with Vampires? Something with Collateral Damage or Blackmail? Just select the corresponding genres and you’re set!
The Activity Feed (Click Image for Full-View)
This is an entirely new aspect of the site. The purpose of this page is to give a general overview of what the user has been up to, be it watching the latest episode of Attack on Titan or following a user with similar interests to their own. This social aspect of Hummingbird will make it easier to stay connected with your friends or even make new friends with similar taste in anime. The new features introduced here include:
- Automatic Activity Updates (Anime watching activity, quote favoriting, reviews written, people followed, etc.)
- Commenting and Liking individual activity updates (Discuss the latest episode your friends have watched, disagree on their rating of a show you loved… or hated.)
- Following / Followers - Easily follow the activity of people you know and respect.
The Library (Click Image for Full-View)
Your Library allows you to keep track of the anime you’re watching, want to watch and finished watching. You guys have given us a TON of feedback on this feature in particular and we think we’ve finally distilled that information into exactly what you’re looking for. New features for the Library include:
- One Click Progress Updates - Easily update the number of episodes you’ve watched by simply clicking the ‘up’ or ‘down’ arrows beside the episode count.
- Add anime to your Library without ever leaving the page by clicking the small ‘+’ in the top toolbar.
- Private Entries - Watch something you’d rather everyone didn’t know about? Individual Library Entries can now be marked ‘Private’ or ‘Public’, allowing you to track your ‘private time’ without making multiple accounts.
We’ve already started rolling out this new design, the revised header is currently live and we’ll be developing the new watchlist features over the next couple of days. We’ll be sending out another very large batch of invites soon so If you haven’t yet registered for the beta:
